Hazel L. Long

AUGUSTA, Ill. -- Hazel L. Long, 97, formerly of Augusta, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Monday (Sept. 23, 2013), in Wesley Village, Macomb.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1915, in Deerfield Township, Fulton County, near Smithfield, a daughter of Ervin and Lula Simpson Myers. She married Bruce D. Long on Dec. 31, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 1973.

As a young girl, Hazel worked as a housemaid, cleaning homes and caring for young children. She later worked at Mickleberry's meat processing plant in Bushnell. After marrying Bruce, she became a farm wife and mother. After living in Prairie City for many years, they moved to a farm north of Huntsville. She later worked for Dennis Chicken Products in Augusta for several years.

She was a member of the Huntsville United Methodist Church, Huntsville HEO Club, Schuyler County Homemaker's Extension, Augusta Senior Citizens and Hancock County RSVP.

Hazel was an excellent seamstress, as she made clothes for her grandchildren and numerous other people. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, reading and especially playing cards and dominoes. She also enjoyed traveling to visit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other family members.

Hazel is survived by one son, Donald Long and his wife, Diane, of Augusta; two grandchildren, Lisa Long Pilger and her husband, Carlton, of Marietta, Ga., and Randy Long and his wife, Heather, of Kannapolis, N.C.; four great-grandsons, Eli Pilger, Gavin Pilger, Grant Long and Mason Long; four nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

In addition to her husband, Bruce, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carroll "Bub" Myers and Charles "Friday" Myers; and an infant sister at birth.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Faith Lutheran Church, Augusta, with the Rev. Kurt Hoover conducting. Burial will be in Prairie City Cemetery, Prairie City.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Hamilton Funeral Home, Augusta.

MEMORIALS: Augusta Senior Citizens Center or the Greater West Central Library District.
