LAGRANGE, Mo. -- James E. "Jim" Cottrell, 89, of LaGrange, died at 3 a.m. Monday (March 17, 2014) at his home in LaGrange.
He was born Jan. 4, 1925, in LaGrange, a son of Willie "Bill" and Bessie Mae Boyer Cottrell. He married Helen "Sis" Cottrell on Feb. 16, 1952, in LaGrange. She died Dec. 16, 2005.
Jimmie graduated from LaGrange High School in 1943 and worked at Gardner Denver before joining the military. He served in World War II
from 1943 to 1946 in the Navy as a second class electrician on a sub base at Pearl Harbor. He also served on the battleship USS Iowa and the USS Gar submarine. Three days after arriving home from the service, Jim started work at the Missouri Gravel Co. where he was a welder and pump boat and crane operator. Jim also farmed and milked his dairy cows twice a day and delivered his milk to the LaGrange Creamery every morning before going to work at the gravel company. Jim served as superintendent at the gravel company until his retirement in 1990. Jim was a member of the LaGrange Lions Club and the LaGrange Christian Church. Jimmie always enjoyed visiting with everyone.
On Oct. 8, 2011, Jim went on the Great River Honor Flight-Mission No. 9, accompanied by his daughter, Patti Stanbridge. Jim's son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Pam Cottrell, participated in the welcome home ride with over 100 Patriot Guard Riders.
He is survived by a son, Michael (Pam) Cottrell of LaGrange; a daughter, Patti (David) Stanbridge of Quincy, Ill.; three granddaughters, Laura (Dan) Meyer of LaGrange, Heather (Wes) Sharpe of Lewistown and Susan Knaff of Quincy; a grandson, Seth (Lisa) Cottrell of Warner, Okla.; 10 great-grandchildren, Haley and Alex Meyer of LaGrange, Madison Cottrell, Brenlynn and Rylan Sharpe of Lewistown, Daycee Cottrell and Trey Hendrix of Warner, Kayzley Stanbridge, Zaine Williams and Luxe Hitzeroth of Quincy; several nieces and nephews; cousins; and his caregivers, Jackie Eston and Burnadean Balzer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers, William and Bob Cottrell.
SERVICES: 11 a.m. Thursday in the Davis Funeral Home in LaGrange with the Rev. Kenneth Ballard officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Mark's Cemetery in LaGrange.
VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Davis Funeral Home in LaGrange.
