PALMYRA, Mo. -- Leola M. Wellman, 91, of Palmyra, passed away at 1:18 p.m. Wednesday (March 5, 2014) in Maple Lawn Nursing Home, Palmyra.
She was born March 28, 1922, in Hannibal, a daughter of Percy G. and Norene Jackson Couch. She married Lawrence A. "Unk" Wellman on Feb. 14, 1942, in Palmyra. He died June 18, 2004.
Leola served as deputy county collector for the Marion County collector in Palmyra for many years.
She was a volunteer at Maple Lawn Nursing Home and a member of their Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Auxiliary of Boots-Dickson Post 174 of the American Legion, a volunteer for RSVP and a volunteer for the Palmyra Nutrition Center delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Palmyra. She was very active in her church where she was a member of the Altar Society, coordinator of the CCD classes and was a member of the Deanery and Diocesan councils of Catholic women.
She is survived by her children, Ann (E. F. "Pat") Murphy of Savanna, Ill., Jon (Jane) Wellman of Palmyra, Peter (Gail) Wellman of Emerson and Tom (Rachel Carter) Wellman of Columbia; grandchildren, Robert (Lora) Murphy of Savanna, David (Kim Gregory) Murphy of Fulton, Ill., Erin (Charles) Wiebenga of Camanche, Iowa, Jacob (Jacqueline) Wellman of Hannibal, Joshua Wellman of Rolla and A.J., Kimberly, Matthew and Nathan Wellman of Emerson; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, Leola was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, H. Jack Couch; a sister, Bettie Marx; a son, Timothy; a daughter, Cathy; infant twin granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter, Candice Murphy.
SERVICES: A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Palmyra, with the Rev. Alex Ekka and Deacon Bob Leake conducting. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Casket Bearers are Rob Murphy, David Murphy, Jake Wellman, Josh Wellman, A.J. Wellman and Keegan Murphy. Honorary bearers are Leola's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. Saturday in the church.
