Marie Helen Kinney, 83, of Quincy, died at 12:48 a.m. Sunday (April 21, 2013) in Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal, Mo.
Mrs. Kinney was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Stanford, Conn., to Oscar and Frances Levandowski Saunders. She was married to William J. Kinney on Feb. 15, 1958, in Quincy. He died May 16, 2008.
Mrs. Kinney was a graduate of St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in New York in 1950. She later graduated from the University of St. John's in New York. Mrs. Kinney came to the Midwest to teach nursing at St. Mary's Hospital in Quincy. She later became the director of nursing at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Hannibal, Mo., where she helped establish the neonatal unit. Mrs. Kinney retired from St. Elizabeth's in 1983.
Mrs. Kinney enjoyed spending time with her nursing friends and her grandchildren. She liked flower gardening and volunteering with the Ladies of Charity. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church; and she was later a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Quincy.
Survivors include two children, Mary Jo Mast (Steve) of Quincy, and John Kinney of Julian, Calif.; one brother, Thomas Saunders of New York; a sister-in-law, Pauline Weir (Richard) of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Alexis and Austin Mast and John Cody Kinney; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walter and Oscar Saunders; and one sister, Emily Zarelli.
SERVICES: Noon Friday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Kuse conducting. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Edina, Mo.
VISITATION: 10 a.m. until time of services Friday in the church.
MEMORIALS: Ladies of Charity or Blessed Sacrament Catholic School.
