MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- Mary Ellen Ferrill, 82, of Mount Sterling, passed away at 1 p.m. Thursday (May 16, 2013) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.
She was born July 31, 1930, in Cooperstown Township of Brown County, a daughter of Raymond J. and Marie Redmond Koch. She married Virgil E. Ferrill on Sept. 19, 1958, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mount Sterling, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1992.
Mary Ellen served as the office manager for Brown County H.I.A. for over 30 years. Earlier in life, she was a teller for Farmer State Bank in Mount Sterling and also worked for the Brown County School Board during the consolidation of one-room schools.
She attended Meyers School in Brown County and graduated from St. Mary's High School with the class of 1948.
Mrs. Ferrill was a devoted member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mount Sterling, where she served her church in numerous capacities.
Mary Ellen had a sincere love for St. Mary's School and showed that by her many hours of volunteer work. Mary Ellen was known as a caring and compassionate person who served her community in many ways, including Brown County Against Cancer and as leader of the exercise program at the Brown County Senior Center. She also would assist in any way she could at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mount Sterling. Mary Ellen was a 20-year member of the Mount Sterling American Legion Post 374 Auxiliary and always enjoyed bowling and traveling all corners of this great country. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan but was known to root for the Cubs if they weren't playing her beloved Redbirds. Mary Ellen truly cherished her family and especially enjoyed attending the many school and sports activities of her grandchildren. Many local residents will truly miss the phone call on their birthday, with Mary Ellen singing them "Happy Birthday."
Survivors include two children, David Ferrill and his wife, JoAnne, and Vada Yingling and her husband, Bruce, all of Mount Sterling; one son-in-law, Roger Herren of Clayton; four grandchildren, Brad and Justin Herren, both of Clayton, and Wade and Erin Yingling, both of Mount Sterling; three stepgrandchildren, Amanda Barry and her husband, Matt, of Liberty, and Hanna and Austin Welty, both of Mount Sterling; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Breckyn Barry of Liberty; two brothers, Robert Koch, and Charles Koch and his wife, Norma, all of Mount Sterling; three sisters, Joan Zurita of Rolling Meadows, Sister Sara Koch of Rantoul, and Rosalee Shank and her husband, Jim, of Decatur; and one sister-in-law, Marylynn Koch of Rolling Meadows.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Marcia Herren; one sister, Pat Koch; two brothers, Donald and Maurice "Bill" Koch; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
SERVICES: A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Family Catholic Church, Mount Sterling, with the Rev. Steven Thompson conducting. Burial will be in Mount Sterling Catholic Cemetery.
VISITATION: 3 to 7 p.m. Monday in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling. A rosary service will be held at the conclusion of the visitation. Friends may also call from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Mary's School.
