Melvin J. Arns

Melvin Joseph Arns, 89, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of 3303 N. College Ave., died on Saturday (Feb. 15, 2014) in the emergency room of Blessing Hospital.

He was born on June 7, 1924, in Quincy, the son of Henry and Caroline Timpe Arns. He married Norma Jean Duesterhaus on June 4, 1951. She died April 20, 2007.

Melvin attended St. Francis Grade School, Quincy College Academy, Quincy Notre Dame and Quincy College. He served in the U.S. Army. Melvin played professional baseball in the minor league system of the Yankees and White Sox teams. He worked at the former Gates Radio and then Crescent Electric.

Melvin enjoyed his grandchildren, sports, especially soccer, yard work and travel.

He is survived by five children, Jeffrey Arns and his wife, Kathleen, Mary McGrath, Roseann Stuckman and her husband, Gary, Dan Arns and his wife, Gabrielle, and David Arns and his wife, Janet, all of Quincy; 11 grandchildren, Rebecca Arns, Kelly Vlasvich and her husband, Chris, Carrie McGrath, Jessica Stuckman, Andrew Stuckman and his wife, Cheryl, Lauren Wolf and her husband, Kevin, Caleb Arns, Ethan Arns, Hayley Arns, Amanda Arns and Stephen Arns; and two great-grandchildren, John and Adam Stuckman. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

In addition to his wife, he is also preceded in death by a son, Terry Arns, and all of his siblings, Raymond Arns, Irmagard Hilgenbrink, Ramona Broeker, Myrtle Tushaus, Flavian Arns, Chester Arns, Esmeralda Wisman, Elmo Arns and Orville Arns.

SERVICES: Noon Wednesday in St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted at the cemetery.

VISITATION: Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of services in the church.

MEMORIALS: St. Francis Catholic Church or Quincy Notre Dame.
