Thomas Edward Vest, 89, of Des Moines, Iowa, died of heart failure Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2013) at Wesley Acres Health Center in Des Moines.
Tom was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Quincy, a son of Louis and Ida Blaesing Vest.
Tom proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps
from 1943-1945 and married the love of his life, Maurine J. Zeiger ,on July 2, 1945, in Jerseyville.
He began his retail management career at JC Penney Co. in Quincy, followed by promotions that took them to Minnesota and North Dakota. The family moved to Des Moines in 1967, where he enjoyed the opportunity to manage several companies including, Helzberg Diamonds, from which he retired in 1992.
Tom and Maurine began ushering at the Civic Center in Des Moines in 1979 on a whim and it turned into an almost 30-year part-time job at the stage door for Tom, where he made many wonderful friends.
Tom loved baseball and was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, attending spring training games in Florida when he could. He was an avid bridge player, a "master griller" and looked forward to pheasant hunting each fall. Tom always had a smile and truly enjoyed interacting with people. If he made a promise he always kept it.
Tom will be lovingly remembered by his three daughters, Nanette (Ivar) Jakobson of Osage, Iowa, Cathryn (Bruce) Roberts of Dunnellon, Fla., and Christine Newell of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou VerKoulen of Evanston, Ill.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 11 nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine, in 2009; his parents; a brother, Bernard Vest; sisters, Marie Jones, Cecelia Colbert and Shirley Smiley; and a son-in-law, Michael Newell.
SERVICES: 11 a.m. Monday in St. Augustin Catholic Church Chapel in Des Moines. A second service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home in Quincy, followed by burial in Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home with military rites by American Legion Post No 37.
VISITATIONS: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Iles-Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines. A second visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home in Quincy.
