Marian Meyer Obituary

Marian Rasmussen Meyer, 87, of Quincy, died at 8:05 a.m. Friday (May 27, 2011) in Sunset Home.

She was born May 3, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wis., the second oldest of five children to Jacob and Nellie Wigen Rasmussen. On Sept. 24, 1949, she married Dr. Richard E. "Dick" Meyer in Milwaukee. They met at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, where she was the department head for occupational therapy, and Dick was doing a medical clerkship with Northwestern Medical School. They have been married for 61 years. He survives.

They moved to Quincy, Dick's childhood home, in 1955, when he accepted a position as ophthalmologist at the Quincy Clinic. Marian lived a busy and fulfilling life as a housewife, mother and grandmother -- carpooling children to music lessons, dance lessons, Scouts and sports. Marian was wonderful as a stay-at-home mother, raising her five children, and greatly enjoying participation in their activities. Her career and background in occupational therapy helped her to enjoy sewing, knitting and crocheting. She was active with the Quincy Public Schools PTA, where she was the past president of Madison School PTA, Adams County Women's Medical Society (now known as Alliance), of which she was past president, Quincy Symphony Women's Guild, now known as Encore, and the Atlantis Study Group, of which she was past president. She was also a member of Women's City Club and Quincy Country Club. She and Dick also enjoyed square dancing and bridge clubs. They cherished the many fond memories of family and friends.

She attended Milwaukee Public Schools and was a graduate of Milwaukee Downer College, now a part of Lawrence University, with a degree in occupational therapy.

In addition to her husband, survivors include five children, Judith Crowther of Darien, Richard Bruce Meyer and his wife, Margaret, of El Paso, Texas, Karen Christie and her husband, Carl, of Roselle, Dr. Roger Meyer and his wife, Mary Jo, of Vero Beach, Fla., and Jeffrey Meyer and his wife, Janet, of Vero Beach; 10 grandchildren, Brian Crowther and his wife, Jennifer, of Lisle, Lauren Crowther of Chicago, Mark Meyer and his wife, Jill, of Dallas, Texas, Kathryn Smith and her husband, Kyle, of Houston, Texas, Bradley Christie of Roselle, Rebecca Krettler and her husband, Jon, of Bartlett, Kathleen Meyer of Tampa, Fla., Meredith Meyer of Vero Beach, Matthew Meyer of Glendale, Calif., and Kristen Meyer of Vero Beach; and two great-grandchildren, Lily Margaret Crowther of Lisle, and Christie Rose Krettler of Bartlett.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Vallone and Genevieve Skornicka; and two brothers, James and Richard Rasmussen.

Marian's family is most appreciative of the tender loving care administered by the staff at Sunset Home.

It was a pleasure to be a care-giver to Marian, she loved to have children visit the home and it would bring a smile to anyone's heart to see her inter act with them. When i think of "through sickness and in health" i will alway's have Dr. Meyer in mind.
