Mary Jeanette Bitter, 80, formerly of Quincy, died peacefully Tuesday (Jan. 15, 2013).

After earning her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Illinois, Jeanette became a tireless supporter of the welfare of children, serving as president of United Way of Illinois and co-founding Voices for Illinois Children.
She was the beloved wife of 57 years to Dr. James E. Bitter; loving mother of Dr. Patricia Lee O'Brien, and James (Rika), John, and Stephen (Connie) Bitter; dear aunt of Katie (John) Stoops; and proud grandmother of four.
