D. Reed Obituary

BOWEN, Ill. -- D. Ruth Reed, 99, of Macomb, formerly of Bowen, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (May 21, 2011) in McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

Ruth was born Feb. 19, 1912, in Chili, Ill., a daughter of Fred and Agnes Tanner Meyer. She graduated from Bowen High School and went on to receive her teaching degree from Carthage College. She then taught in the rural schools. On June 12, 1935, she was united in marriage to Draper Reed in Denver, Ill. He died in 1993.

Ruth was a member of Bowen Christian Church. She was active in 4-H serving as a leader. She was a longtime volunteer for the local Red Cross blood drives and at Memorial Hospital in Carthage as a grey lady. She was also a member of the Homemakers Extension and the Quilter's Club. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, making crafts and spending time with her family.

Ruth is survived by a son, Dan (Nancy) Reed of Macomb; a daughter, Shirlene (Eldon) Sparrow of Dallas City; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Deborah) Sparrow, Brent (Kelly) Sparrow, Eric (Shannon) Reed, Douglas (Stephanie) Reed and Margaret (Andrew) Taylor; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Fred Eugene Meyer, who was killed in World War II.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bowen Christian Church with burial to follow in Bowen Cemetery.

VISITATION: 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services Wednesday in the church.

MEMORIALS: Bowen Christian Church, the Elms Nursing Center in Macomb and the Everly House in Macomb.

ARRANGEMENTS: Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.
