Daniel F. "Dan" Maier, 69, of Fort Myers, Fla., died at 8 a.m. Saturday (July 13, 2013) in Venice, Fla. A Rantoul/Thomasboro, Ill., native, Mr. Maier was born Oct. 13, 1943, at Burnham Hospital in Champaign. He was a son of Lawrence "Boots" and Mary Jane Arnold Maier. He graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1961 and Quincy College in 1967. A U.S. Army veteran, Maier served as supply sergeant of the 283rd Helicopter Medical Evacuation Detachment in Pleiku, Vietnam, in 1968-69. After 18 years with NCR and Herman Cash Register he was appointed comptroller of the city of Quincy and served from September 1988 through 2000. He served as president and secretary of the Quincy Chapter of Ducks for the Future, treasurer of Western Illinois Democrat Day Committee, treasurer of the Quincy Convention and Visitors Bureau, board member of the Quincy Firemen's Pension Officers Association. A "life member" of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, North American Hunters Club, Migratory Waterfowl Hunters, Inc., and the Illinois Federation of Outdoor Resources. Dan was also a member of Ducks Unlimited Illinois, Waterfowlers Alliance Illinois, League of Municipal Employees, and Illinois Government Finance Officers Association. Mr. Maier was an avid hunter, fisherman, environmentalist and wildlife conservationalist and golfer. Surviving are a son, John of Appleton, Wis., and a stepson, Joe Spanheimer of Suisun City, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rita Maier DeCorrevont. SERVICES: 10 a.m. Friday in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 100 S. Church St., in Thomasboro, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Donton. Graveside services will follow at St. Elizabeth's Cemetery with Champaign VFW Post 5520 conducting military rites.
