Mr. Donald K. Hungate, 87, of Quincy, died at 12:40 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 27, 2014) in the Good Samaritan Home.

Born March 23, 1926, in Quincy, he was a son of Larkin B. and Ethel M. King Hungate. He married Dorothy Fleer Todd on March 26, 1970, in Hot Springs, Ark. She died Feb. 4, 2006.

Don was member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was an accomplished pool player, winning many trophies in the local pool league. He also enjoyed playing cards, golf and league bowling. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. He received the European Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars and the Distinguished Unit Badge.

He was first employed at Hemming Motor News in Quincy for several years and then went to work for the United States Postal Service in Quincy from 1964 until his retirement in 1989.

Survivors include a son, Bill F. Todd (Glenda) of Quincy; a daughter, Jakay Todd Steckler of Quincy; five grandchildren, Michael W. Todd, Paula Reinhardt (J.D.), Chad Todd (Chris) and Shawn Steckler (Jackie), all of Quincy, and Paul Steckler (Debbie) of St. Peters, Mo.; and 11 great-grandchildren, Michael C. Todd (Lori), Alyssa Collins (Alan), John Reinhardt III, Ben Reinhardt, Cristen Todd, Caitlyn Todd, Evan Steckler, Ellen Steckler, Adam Steckler, Brittany Steckler and Brendan Steckler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and a son-in-law, David Steckler.

SERVICES: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday graveside in Sunset Cemetery with Pastor Ken Kramer conducting. Military honors will be conducted by Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail.

VISITATION: There will be no visitation but friends are invited to the graveside services.
