FOWLER, Ill. -- Garrett W. "Jack" Bowen, 90, of Fowler, died at 12:52 a.m. Sunday (March 9, 2014) in the Sycamore Healthcare Centre in Quincy. Born June 29, 1923, in Mexico, Mo., Jack was a son of Charles and Louetta Ingram Bowen. He married Mary McCabe on Dec. 7, 1946, in Quincy. She survives. Mr. Bowen served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II seeing action in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He received three Overseas Service Bars, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with four Bronze Battle Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Bowen was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions during the Battle of the Bulge. Jack was honored to be chosen to go on the Sept. 14, 2011, Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. A devoted family man, Jack loved the time he spent with them, especially the annual family trips to the Ozarks. An avid Quincy High Blue Devils basketball and St. Louis Cardinals fan, Jack also enjoyed fishing and listening to classic country music. Jack was employed as a cement mason for many years, based in Central Illinois and working throughout the Midwest United States for many years with Local 18 Plasterers and Cement Masons. He retired in 1998. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Wayne Bowen of Fowler and Scott Bowen (Julie) of Quincy; two daughters, Deborah More of Springfield, Ill., and Tina Bowen of Fowler; nine grandchildren, Vincent Bowen, Heather Felker (Eric), Marcy Kelle, Zach Bowen, Erin Little, Amy Mueller, Robyn More, Michael More and Brittany More; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Bowen was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Russell Bowen and Oakley Bowen; and four sisters, Mattie Alexander, Norma Hendricks, Eunice Bleakley and Goldie Kramer. SERVICES: 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy, with the Rev. Roy Bauer conducting. Burial with military honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Sunset Cemetery in Quincy. VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday until the time of services in the funeral home. MEMORIALS: Family of Garrett "Jack" Bowen.
