BARRY, Ill. -- George A. Bowen, 81, of Barry, died at 12:40 p.m. Friday (Jan. 24, 2014) in his home. He was born April 2, 1932, in Hadley Township, Pike County, to Fred Steve and Ruth Evelyn Kenady Bowen. They preceded him in death. He married Lillian B. Lampton on April 7, 1962, in St. John's Church in Peoria. She survives in Barry. George graduated from Barry High School in 1950. He served in the Navy from 1951 to December 1955. He was on the USS LST 1546, and then transferred to the USS Lipan in Korea during the war. He received the Navy Combat Ribbon and the Korean Combat Ribbon. He was discharged from the Naval Reserves. George was a lifelong union member and retired from Quincy Compressor after 29 years. He was a charter member of the Barry VFW post and was an American Legion member. He was a volunteer and driver at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is also survived by two sons, George Albert Bowen Jr., wife Michelle, of Denham Springs, La., and Phillip Steven Bowen, wife Gloria, of Rowlett, Texas; one daughter, Ruth Elaine Phillips (Andrew Dolbeare) of Barry; three granddaughters, Celina Bowen (Jao'Torey Johnson) of Garland, Texas, Jolie Bowen of Rowlett, and Rachel Phillips of Barry, and one great-grandson, Jao'Torey Johnson Jr. of Garland. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James C. (Hazel) Bowen and Fred (Mary) Bowen Jr., and one sister, Gleah Lowe (Tony). SERVICES: A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday n Holy Family Catholic Church in Hannibal, Mo. Inurnment will be in Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy, Ill. Veterans services will be by Barry American Legion Post No. 222. Inurnment honor guard will be by Quincy American Legion Post No. 37.
