SHELBINA, Mo. -- James Arthur Julius Schaffer, 79, of Shelbina, died Saturday (Aug. 24, 2013) in Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal. He was born May 17, 1934, in Quincy, Ill., a son of Arthur William and Ruth Elizabeth Feld Schaffer, Sr. He married Terry Pauline Smith on June 30, 1977. She survives of the home. James was of the Baptist faith. He graduated from Quincy High School with the class of 1952. He served his country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Air Force and retired after 22 years of military service. After retiring from the service, James worked as a electrical construction journeyman in Texas, North Dakota, Kansas and Missouri. His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Gary Schaffer, Hudson, Fla., Mark Schaffer, Monroe City, and Scott Schaffer (Lisa), Lawrenceville, Ga.; one daughter, Paula Lute, Moberly; four grandchildren, Caitlin, Rachael and Nicholas Schaffer, all of Georgia, and Isabelle Lute of Moberly; two sisters, Janice Schaffer, Quincy, and Janet Crabill (Leland), Ewing; and one brother, Arthur Schaffer Jr. (Myriam Pelly), St. Louis. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald and Terry Schaffer.
