Joseph Gerard Bruney Obituary
Joseph Gerard Bruney, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Monday, July 2, 2018, in hospice care in Anaheim, Calif., after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 85.

Joseph was born Jan. 13, 1933, in New York to Joseph G. and Lillian C. Bruney. He moved to the island of Dominica when he was 4 years old, and later returned to New York to complete his high school and college education.

Joseph attended, ran cross-country for and graduated from City College of New York in 1955, obtaining his bachelor of science degree in social work. After college, Joseph joined the U.S. Army, where he served for several years in Germany and other parts of the world.

Joseph married Mae Elaine Harris on July 8, 1958, in Jackson Heights, N.Y. They then moved to California and started their careers in the social work field, and eventually began a second career in the real estate business, becoming a successful investor and landlord. Joe and Elaine were married for 56 years, until Elaine died in 2014.

Joe's favorite hobby and passion was running, swimming and cycling. He completed many races, half-marathons and marathons, including the New York City Marathon in 1979. His greatest racing accomplishments were completing the IronMan Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. In 1996, he placed 13th in his age group at age 63. In 1998, he returned to Kona and competed in the IronMan again at the age of 65, improving his time by 23 minutes. In 2003, Joe completed the California Half IronMan at the age of 70.

Joseph is survived by his sons, Colin of Downey, Calif., and Russell, wife Amy, and granddaughter, Alexa, of Quincy.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elaine; and son, Christopher.

SERVICES: The family will hold a private memorial as they spread his remains at sea, beside his beloved wife, Elaine, who was laid to rest near Balboa Bay in 2014.
