Kenneth Plowman Obituary

Kenneth "Kenny" Lee Plowman, 89, of Quincy, died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday (May 14, 2011) at the Westview Nursing Home in Center, Mo.

Mr. Plowman was born April 19, 1922, in Bentley, a son of James Markwell Plowman and Mary Anna Wilder Plowman. He married V. Gladys Browning on April 25, 1964, in Quincy. She died May 3, 2005.

He graduated from Quincy High School in 1940.

Mr. Plowman served in the Army Medical Corps in the United States Army during World War II. He participated in the Normandy invasion landing on D-Day and saw combat action until the German breakthrough in Belgium, when he lost his hearing from the bursts of artillery shells. He was a member of Gen. George Patton's spearhead 90th Infantry Division as a combat medic and was awarded the Bronze Star for his action in the Normandy invasion.

Upon his return from the war he was a floral designer for Kroner Florist in Quincy for several years. He retired as a nurse's assistant from the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, working there for 12 years. He was a very active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Quincy. He helped with the AWANA program, taught Sunday school for 20 years, and served on the Usher Squad for many years.

Mr. Plowman was an antique pocket watch collector and repairman for more than 50 years. He was a diehard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and loved to watch football games. He lived in the area most of his life.

His parents; his three brothers, Leo Plowman, Leonard Plowman and Russell Plowman; and his sister Goldie Plowman also preceded him in death.

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Friday at the Grand View Funeral Home, 11116 Hwy. 6, in Hannibal, Mo. Pastor Brian Hess will officiate. Burial with full military honors by the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post 55 and the Lt. Kenneth Lee Coontz VFW Post 446 will follow at the Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

VISITATION: Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Grand View Funeral Home, Hannibal.

MEMORIALS: Calvary Baptist Church in Quincy in care of Grand View Funeral Home.

ARRANGEMENTS: Grand View Funeral Home, Hannibal, Mo.
