EMDEN, Mo. -- Lillian Katherine Hughes, 81, of Emden, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2014) in Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Lillian was born on Nov. 21, 1932, in Chambersburg, Ill., a daughter of Levi Wesley and Esther Addaline Surratt Dennis. On Aug. 16, 1949, in Pittsfield, Ill., Lillian married Guy Burl Hughes; he died March 19, 2006.

Lillian worked for Henderson Produce in Monroe City. She then went to work for Borron Processing in Shelbina until her retirement. After retirement, she would volunteer at the Shelby County Senior Centers.

She enjoyed gardening, raising animals on the farm and visiting with friends and family. Lillian and her late husband, Guy, spent many hours researching family genealogy, which they called their labor of love.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by daughters, Carolyn Marie Carter and friend Harold Smallwood of Shelbyville and Linda Loretta Brummer (Lester) of Monroe City; a son, Guy Robert Hughes (Chris) of Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Debbie Hughes of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Sylvia Waters (Jonathan), Kim Keith, Nora Brummer, Esther Kribble, James Cox (Jenine), Gina Lain, Brittany Lugena (Nick), Jessica Miller (Darrell), Angie Carroll (Joe) and Dell Brummer; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Levi Wesley Dennis II (Bernita); sister, Lorrie Engle; and niece, Crystal Dennis.

Along with her husband and parents, Lillian was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Vincent Brummer; and great-grandchildren, Justin Cox and Emberly Waters.

SERVICES: 1 p.m. Monday in the Yager-Kendrick Funeral Home in Monroe City with burial to follow in the Emden Memorial Gardens in Emden.

VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
