Lola "Faye" Schroeder, 95, formerly of Quincy, beloved wife, mother, neighbor and dear friend to many, succumbed to a long battle with Alzheimer's on Dec. 30, 2013, in California. Faye was born on Dec. 19, 1918. She grew up in Paloma and went to school in the area as well as met her husband, Harold Schroeder. In December 1941, they started their 60-plus years of marriage together. In 1943, During World War II, the two of them, with their infant son, Kit, chose to adventure away from the community they had known in search of new opportunities. Faye and Harold started their California journey in Inglewood, a sunny Southern California town near Los Angeles. She owned a small cafe there for a short time before moving in 1947 to Fresno, Calif. Shortly after moving to Fresno, Faye went back to school to become a nurse. Her caring nature made her career in nursing a blessing for every patient she attended. She practiced nursing for more than 40 years until her retirement from the Veterans Hospital in Fresno. Shortly after her retirement, she and Harold moved back to their homeland and took residence in Quincy. Faye had been staying in California with her daughter, Kay, during the recent years of her illness. Survivors include a son, Harold Kit (Jane) Schroeder of Reston, Va.; a daughter, Clara "Kay" Schroeder of Temecula, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Mary Colleen Schroeder, Jill Suzanne Hale, Ted William Schroeder, Margaret Faye Macias and Mark Randall Macias. Faye was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; and her brothers, Herbert, Forest and Ephraim Lutes. SERVICES: 2 p.m. Saturday in Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ with the Rev. Ken Kramer conducting. A reception will be held at Salem Church following the funeral and graveside services hosted by the Salem Women's Afternoon Guild. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. VISITATION: 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, Faye's family suggests memorial donations be made to VNA -- California Hospice of Murrieta because of the extraordinary care and support they provided over the past two years.
