CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Marlin Kenneth Long, 83, of Carthage, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday (May 20, 2013) in Memorial Hospital in Carthage. Marlin was born June 27, 1929, in Beardstown, the son of Kenneth and Lydia Culves Long. He attended Carthage High School, graduating in 1947. On June 26, 1949, he was united in marriage to Joan Leontine Ellison at the Lutheran parsonage in Carthage. She survives. They were married 63 years. Marlin and Joan owned and operated many restaurants over the years in Carthage, including the Carmanlough Supper Club, Joan's Pizza Parlor and Appian Way Pizza. They owned the Tastee Freeze in Carthage for more than 20 years. They currently owned and operated the Long Branch Restaurant/Double Deuce. He had started at the Carthage College cafeteria which he ran from 1949 until 1964. Marlin had also worked at the Cargill Pellet plant and was the owner of the Long Insurance Co. and was still a Realtor with Sharpe Real Estate. He was a 50-year member of the Oddfellows and the Masonic Lodge. Marlin had also served on the Hancock County Board and Carthage Planning Commission for many years. Marlin is survived by his wife, Joan, of Carthage; five children, Marla Joan (Doug) Grossaint, Randall Ken Long, Ricky Kevin Long and Terry Lynn (Sheri') Long, all of Carthage, and Marcia Jo (Jeff) Patterson of Quincy; 14 grandchildren, Todd (Chelle) Grotts, Cassie Grotts, Dusty (Amanda) Grotts, Shane Alexander, Lindsay Long and Drew Dickerson, all of Carthage, McKensey (Wyatt) Green of Burnside, Caleb (Terri) Long of Mackinaw, Breton Long of Tulsa, Okla., Breegan Long of Orlando, Fla., Shawnee (Cody) Deters of Fowler, Jimmie Patterson of Quincy, and Ryan Grossaint and Scott (Heidi) Grossaint of Portland, Ore.; and 13 great-grandchildren, Bryor, Brianna, Brennan and Bryson Grotts, DeVante Jackson and Elleanna Mantia, Kelsey and Sydney Grotts, Avinlee Wade, Madyson Day and Brynley Long, Tyler Grossaint, Sebastian Grossaint and two more due in November. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty, in infancy. SERVICES: 2 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.
