HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Mary E. Sims Thompson, 75, formerly of Hannibal, died Jan. 17, 2014, in the Holmesdale Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Kansas City, after a lengthy illness. She was born July 7, 1938, in Trenton, a daughter of Pinkie D. and Vella I. Sims of Hannibal. Mary was a member of the Hannibal Senior High School class of 1956. She was formerly employed by Atlantic Steel and Shinn Residential Center Inc. of Hannibal as a caregiver. Mary also was a former member of the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary Club. Mary enjoyed music, comedies, travel, playing bingo and other games. Survivors include her son, Robert (Jane) Morriss of Liberty, Ill.; her daughter, Deneta Smashey (Steve) of Kansas City; her daughter, Diane Whitley (Matt) of Hannibal; and her son John Thompson (Paula) of Hull, Ill. Mary is also survived by several grandchildren, Matthew Stone, Angelique Valentini, Bo Morriss, Lucas Morriss, and Madaline and Reese Thompson; and great-granchildren, Mya and Raiden Stone, Nathan Morriss, Mark Morriss, Samantha Valentini, Isabella Valentini, Alexander Valentini, Logan Morriss and Cameron Morriss. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews who she enjoyed. Her living siblings are James Sims and Joyce Shinn of Hannibal, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Darrell Smashey; brothers Donald Sims, Gary Sims, Lester Sims and Larry Sims; a grandson, Christopher Stone; and a great-grandson, Anthony Valentini. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Children's Mercy Hospital Cancer Center in Kansas City in memory of Christopher Stone or to St. Louis Children's Hospital in St. Louis in memory of Anthony Valentini.
