Melvin J. Hummel Sr. Obituary
Melvin J. Hummel Sr., 93, of the Illinois Veterans Home, died on Thursday (July 18, 2013) in the home. He was born on May 4, 1920, in Quincy, a son of Anton and Agnes Brink Hummel. He married Delores "De De" K. Dudley on June 29, 1946. She preceded him in death on May 22, 2009.

Melvin served in the U.S. Army during WWII, stationed in the Philippines. He was the recipient of four bronze stars. Melvin proudly participated in the third Great River Honor Flight.

He worked for Kohl Grocery as a truck driver for 37 and a half years, retiring in 1986.

He was a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, and he served as an usher at church for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and he was past president and a 70-year member of the Eagles.

Melvin truly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was passionate about maintaining his yard and keeping his car spotless. He was the last of eight brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Bolte and her husband, Bob, of Mendon and Pam Hills and her husband, Leland, of Quincy; seven grandchildren, Bill Hummel and his wife, Karen, of Carlyle, Christina Simpson and her husband, Brian, of Quincy, Tony Bolte and his wife, Amanda, of Macomb, Stephanie Bolte of Quincy, Matthew Bolte of Camp Point, Lance Winget of Quincy and Misty Roberts and her husband, Chris, of Augusta; one stepgrandchild, Tyler Hills of Hamilton; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, De De, and his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe Hummel; brothers, Walter, Wilburt, Raymond, Ralph, Herb, Paul and LeRoy; sisters, Ruth, Dorothy, Margaret and Florence; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Bolte.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Monday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church with the Rev. Duc Pham, O.F.M., conducting. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Honor Detail.

VISITATION: 4-7 p.m. today in the funeral home, with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
