WEST POINT, Ill. -- Michael E. Whelan, 61, of 285 County Road 1500, West Point, died at 7:37 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 21, 2013) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy. He was born Feb. 17, 1952, in Quincy, a son of Everett Whelan and Ruth (Loman) Hultz. He married Kathy Campbell on Feb. 25, 1971, in Quincy. She survives. Michael served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked for Fed Ex, retiring after 25 years of service. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved time spent hunting and fishing. In addition to his wife, Kathy, he is survived by a daughter, Dena Steinkamp and her husband, Todd, of Ursa; his stepfather, Joe Hultz, of Quincy; one brother, Todd Whelan of Moline,; two grandchildren, Alyssa and Zach Steinkamp of Ursa; nephews Matthew, Austin and Nathan Whelan; and niece Bethany Cordes and her husband, Thomas, and children Henry, Maggie and Charlie. Numerous cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carol Creely SERVICES:11 a.m. Friday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home followed by a 2 p.m. graveside service with military honors in West Point Cemetery.
