Michael Edward Emerick, 62, of 1103 Rhapsody Road died at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday (June 19, 2012) after a seven-year battle with cancer.

Michael was born on Aug. 3, 1949, to Clarence "Fritz" and Mildred Hamm Emerick. He married Kathy L. Johnson on Nov. 6, 1971, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She survives.

Michael graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1967 and went on to attend Quincy University, majoring in sociology. He became a meatcutter in 1978, loving his profession for the next 30 years. He was an adult literacy volunteer through John Wood Community College.

Michael was also a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church with his wife, Kathy. Various hobbies and interests of Mike included reading and Motown music. He was also known as quite the film aficionado. Other interests included playing the piano and horseback riding.

In addition to his wife, Kathy, he is survived by three children, Amanda Emerick Sparrow of Quincy, Kate Emerick of Quincy and Max Michael Emerick and his wife, Kristin, of St. Louis; grandchildren, Maggie Rose Sparrow, Silas Lee Sparrow and Brodie Wyatt, all of Quincy; and two brothers, Tom Emerick and his wife Christy and Scott Emerick, all of Quincy.

In addition to his biological relatives, Mike also wanted to recognize what he called his "bonus relatives" including his bonus son, Mark Wyatt; as well as his bonus granddaughter, Lyssa Marie Caddell, all of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Raymond Smith and the staff of the Blessing Cancer Center.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Friday in Vermont Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Scott Grulke.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.

MEMORIALS: Vermont Street United Methodist Church.
