Valera Eland, 96, of Plymouth, Mich., formerly of Quincy, died Friday (Sept. 14, 2012) in a nursing home in Michigan. She was born Nov. 21, 1915, in Quincy, a daughter of William H. and Mary Wittland Ellerbrake. She married Charles F. Eland on June 15, 1939, in Jefferson City, Mo. He died on June 10, 1984. Valera was a 1934 graduate of Quincy High School and Gem City Business College. In her younger years, she was employed at Central Illinois Public Services for several years until her retirement. She was a faithful and active member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ. She taught Sunday school for several years, served on the Undershepherd Board, the Adopt-a-Friend program and Ritual of Friendship. She was a member of the Salem Women's Guild, Salem Singles and the Good Samaritan Home Auxiliary. Survivors include her son, Thomas Eland (Patricia) of Plymouth; three grandchildren, Angela Reed (Phillip) of Northville, Mich., Christopher Zwarka (Melissa) of Atlanta, Ind., and James Bergemann (Julie) of Minneapolis; four great-grandchildren, Karen Reed and Danielle Reed, both of Northville, and Isabel Bergemann and Mackenzie Bergemann, both of Minneapolis; four nephews, James Ellerbrake, Darrel Jones, Dick Jones and Edward Eland; three nieces, Margaret Ellen Treston, Caryl Kerr and Elizabeth Wasson; and great-nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Russell and Marvin Ellerbrake; and a sister, Mildred Monckton. SERVICES: 10 a.m. Saturday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Wanda Seydel conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
