Helen Virlee Slater, 89, of the Good Samaritan Home, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 21, 2014) in the Good Samaritan Home.

Born Jan. 12, 1925, in Quincy, Virlee was a daughter of Wilmer and Lucy Wood Cornwell. She married Harold Leo Slater on June 21, 1947, in Quincy. He died Sept. 4, 2005.

A graduate of Quincy High School and the Blessing Hospital School of Nursing, Virlee was employed as a school nurse for the Logan County Health Department. She moved back to Quincy in 1982 and worked for several years with the Adams County Health Department until her retirement.

Virlee was a member of Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, reading and camping, and she loved to travel, especially on the annual family vacations.

Survivors include a son, Brad Slater (Sue) of Lincoln; two daughters, Luan Durham (Stan) of Jefferson City, Mo., and Tara Bartholomew (Donald) of DeSoto, Kan.; three grandchildren, Eric Durham (Amanda), Kerri Slater (Shane Lucas) and Tom Perry (Teri); six great-grandchildren, Keith Hart, Hayden Slater, Hilary Lucas, Aubrey Lucas, Taylor Perry and Jordan Perry; two brothers, Larry Cornwell (Sara) of Prescott, Ariz., and William Cornwell (Betty) of Quincy; a sister-in-law, Darlene Cornwell of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Slater was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Greg Slater and Randy Heinzel; and a brother, Gerald Cornwell.

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Saturday in Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ron Cox conducting. Burial will be in the Ellington Home Cemetery.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and 1 p.m. Saturday until the services in the church.

MEMORIALS: Ellington Memorial Presbyterian Church or Good Samaritan Home.
