Ann Hughes, 91, of the St. Vincent's Home, formerly of 1820 Spruce, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2014) in St. Vincent's Home.

She was born July 24, 1922, in Steinach, Germany, a daughter of Josef and Berta Leserer Winter. She married Harold L. Hughes, a U.S. soldier stationed in Germany on July 24, 1948, in Bad Mergentheim, Germany. She came to the United States on Oct. 29, 1948, as a war-bride.

She always prayed for and was greatly concerned about peace among nations. She taught herself to speak, read and write English. She also was an ardent reader and writer. Many of her "Letters to the Editor" were published by the Quincy Herald-Whig. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by, two sons, Henry Hughes and his wife, Carolyn, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Harold C. Hughes and his wife, Kathy, of Peoria; five grandchildren, Gregory Hughes and his wife Susan, Cindy Hughes, Caryn Grimm, Michael Hughes and his fiancé Tammy Claypool, and Stephanie Hadsell and her husband Justin; five great-grandchildren, Cassidy Grimm, Mason Grimm, Lyla Hadsell, Benjamin Hadsell and Wesley Hadsell.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Heinrich Leserer.

SERVICES: Noon Friday in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery.

VISITATION: 11 a.m. Friday until time of services.

MEMORIALS: St. Vincent's Home or to the Unity Point Hospice.
