Everett Eugene "Gene" Starman, 88, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of 1429 Adams, Quincy, died at 2 p.m. Monday (Feb. 10, 2014) at the Illinois Veterans Home.

Born Jan. 1, 1926 in Keokuk, Iowa, Gene was a son of Everett John and Leona Phillips Starman. He married M. Carlene Shriver on June 29, 1949. She died on April 18, 2012.

Gene was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and a former member of Luther Memorial Church, where he had served on the Church Council and was active with the Men's Brotherhood. He was also a member of Herman Masonic Lodge No. 39 and Carpenter's Union Local 189, and a volunteer at Good Samaritan Home and for Meals on Wheels for many years.

Gene handcrafted and donated toys he made for local children.

Mr. Starman served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Gene was employed as a carpenter at Huck Fixtures for 31 years, retiring Aug. 1, 1992.

Survivors include four daughters, Carla S. Harper of Fort Worth, Texas, Janeen B. "Jan" Rilea of Rawlins, Wyo., Lynn G. Starman (Abdirahman Mohamed) of Kenya and Leann R. Thurston (Brian) of Williamstown, N.J.; a son, Randall E. "Randy" Starman of Menlow Park, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Logan A. Harper, Justin Garner (Jennifer), Austin Garner (Sarah), Ryan Starman, Zakariya Dirie, Aden Dirie and Hailey Thurston; three great-grandchildren, Rogan Garner, Isabella Garner and Esemae Garner; a sister, Arlete Smallwood of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Zola Shriver Cadwallader of Claremont, Calif.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Starman was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carlene.

SERVICES: In following with the wishes of Mr. Starman, cremation rites have been accorded. Services will be private.

VISITATION: There is no visitation.
