CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Lola "Ruth" Ufkes, 96, died at her home in Carthage at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

Lola "Ruth" Carr Ufkes was born near Liberty, on July 27, 1917, the daughter of William and Susan Walker Carr.

She graduated from LaPrairie High School in 1934.

Ruth married Henry G. Ufkes on Feb. 11, 1936.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage.

Ruth and Henry farmed in the West Point area until they retired to Carthage in 1977. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she was a Sunday school teacher for many years at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bowen. She sang in the choir and was a Gray Lady, a lifetime member of the Carthage Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a 4-H leader. She loved her rose garden, playing cards, her quilting group and staying in touch with her Facebook friends. In her earlier years, she was an accomplished amateur painter.

She is survived by two children, Ronald and his wife, Janice, of Lakeview, Ark., and Carol Rankin and her husband, Dennis, of West Point, Illinois. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, Pamela (Ed) Fonzi, Patricia (Tom) Elbert, Phillip Ufkes (deceased) and his wife, Denise, Paul (Pam) Ufkes, Dr. Gayle (Kevin) Gottman, Tracy (Scot Randle) Rankin and Amanda (husband, Jim Kling) Rankin. Her great-grandchildren include September (Mike) Jones, John (Sophi) Fonzi, Joseph Fonzi, Anthony Fonzi, William Elbert, Carrie Ufkes, Kristen Ufkes, MaryAnn Ufkes, Samatha Ufkes, Gage Ufkes, Eric Gottman, Emma Gottman and Henry Kling; her great-great-grandchildren include Nathan Jones, Blake Jones, Bradley Jones and Tara Fonzi; and her three step-great grandchildren are Zack and Zoey Robertson and Lillie Randal.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry in 2006; and infant daughter; a sister, Clara; and a grandson, Phillip Ufkes.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Bowen Cemetery at Bowen.

VISITATION: 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, in the Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with family meeting friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

MEMORIALS: Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage or McDonough District Hospital Hospice.
