Nita L. Johnson

CARTHAGE, Ill. -- Nita L. Johnson, 76, of Carthage, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday (June 27, 2014) at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

Nita was born March 4, 1938, in Watseka, the daughter of Leroy Thomas "Stix" and Juanita Jordan Morley.

She graduated from Western High School in Macomb and went on to receive her bachelor and master degrees from Western Illinois University.

On May 1, 1965, she was married to Richard Johnson in Macomb. He survives.

Nita was a lifelong teacher. She had taught at Peoria Richwoods, Lake Park, East Peoria and Milledgeville High School, and Robert Morris College and Western Illinois University. She retired from Carthage High School in 2003.

Nita had a great love of antiques and operated the Wagon Wheel in Carthage for many years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren and attending their sporting events.

Nita is survived by her husband, Richard, of Carthage; four children, Doug (Debbie) Johnson of Quincy, Dee Dee (Scott) Higgins of Macomb, Jenny Johnson of Quincy, and Janeen (Alan Wayson) Johnson of Hamilton; six grandchildren, Jordan and Courtney Johnson, Ben and Hannah Higgins, and Kaden and Teley Johnson; her sister, Tena (Richard) Reed of Carthage; sister-in-law, Joan (Curt) Pflum of Burlington, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 3, graveside services will be held in Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb.
