HANNIBAL, Mo. -- James E. "Jim" Gumm Sr., 82, of Hannibal, died at 6:55 a.m. Saturday (July 5, 2014) in the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill. Mr. Gumm, Sr. was born May 22, 1932, in Petersburg, Ill., to Edward Eckhoff and Margaret Paulen. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as an infantryman, conducting nightly raids against North Korea. After being honorably discharged, he worked at Electric Wheel before having a successful career as a salesman for several companies including Chief Industries Inc. and Churchhill Chemicals, before retiring in 1996. In 1987, he met his longtime companion, Virginia Dotson. She survives him. Survivors also include his children, Betty (Jim) Brewer of Normal, Ill., Jim Gumm Jr. of Hannibal, Patty (Bill) Sederwall of Quincy, Peggy (Dan) Wesner of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Matt (Theresa) Gumm of Quincy; his 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Jennifer Gumm Schutte. SERVICES: Graveside services will be at noon Wednesday, July 9, in Fairview Cemetery near Louisiana, Mo. Pastor Lonnie Landess will conduct. VISITATION: There will be no visitation. MEMORIALS: Blessing Foundation for Hospice, in care of the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.
