Bert Henry Johnston, 84, of Springfield, formerly of Quincy and Jacksonville, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 22, 2012) in Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born March 21, 1928, in Chicago, a son of Clarence Elmer Sr. and Jennie Elizabeth Brown Johnston. He married Sherla Belle Weems on May 9, 1953, in Salem, Ark. She survives.

Bert attended Quincy schools and graduated from Quincy Technical School. He worked for Quincy College cafeteria through Saga Foods for 24 years, retiring in 1990. He was also a licensed electrician.

Mr. Johnston was a veteran of World War II, having served his country in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the House of Prayer in Kinderhook, where he served as elder. He was also a member of PASA, and his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Sherla Johnston, of Springfield, survivors include three children, Patsy Johnson and her companion, Don Duckworth, Gary Johnston and his wife, Robin, both of Bakersfield, Calif., and Douglas Johnson of Loami; 12 grandchildren, Jaylene Epperson and her husband, Darren, and Misty Mitchell, both of Springfield, Sherri Lynch and her husband, Bill, and Tara Dyer, both of Quincy, Brandy Lee and her husband, Jason, of Loami, and Tanya Ochoa and her husband, Javier, LeeAnn Johnston, Kayla Contreras, Deanna Thompson, Stacey Brown, Josh Johnston and Terry Lee Johnson, all of California; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Johnston and his wife, Rita, of Cape Fair, Mo.; two sisters, Elsie Hayes and her husband, John, of Quincy and Gail Hadsell and her husband, Sam, of Payson; two brothers-in-law, Ray Weems and his wife, Darlene, of Quincy and H.D. Weems and his wife, Mary, of Chillicothe, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Ewalt and her husband, Bud, of Mesa, Ariz. and Vera Weems of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Vicki Jo Lamma; a son, Ricky Johnston, in infancy; a grandson, Kevin Johnson; two brothers, Clarence Johnston Jr. and Joe Johnston; and a sister, Sarah Tucker.

SERVICES: Cremation rites will be accorded and private graveside services will be held at a later date in the Hersman Cemetery south of Mount Sterling.

MEMORIALS: House of Prayer or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Memorials may be left at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling.
