BOWEN, Ill. -- Doris Mae Smith, 86, of Bowen, entered into her eternal glory at 1:20 p.m. Monday (Dec. 3, 2012) in her home in Bowen.

She was born on March 9, 1926, in Augusta, a daughter of William Leon and Martha Viola Hull Ramsey. She married George Albert Smith on Aug. 24, 1952, in Peoria. He died on Oct. 2, 1980.

Doris was raised on the family farm northeast of Bowen and attended Rose Hill Grade School. She was a graduate of Bowen Community High School in 1943. After high school, Doris moved to Hollywood, Calif., and attended Los Angeles College where she excelled in archery and received an associate arts degree. She later returned to Illinois and attended Macomb Teachers College and later enrolled in the training program at Methodist Hospital in Peoria where she received her certificate of registry as a medical technologist in 1947.

While in Peoria attending Hale Memorial Methodist Church, Doris met her husband. They were married and later moved to Naperville and Downers Grove where George pursued his teaching career. After his death, Doris returned to Bowen in 1988 and became very active in the United Methodist Church. She was a member of DAR, American Legion Auxiliary, Hancock County Historical Society, and the Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by an aunt, Eleanor Junk of Carthage; six nephews, Rodney Ramsey (Linda) of LeRoy, Rick Ramsey (Cindy) of Augusta, Russell Ramsey (Beth) of Rochester, Regan Ramsey of Bowen, Rocco Ramsey (Chris) of Bowen, and Ryan Ramsey (Becky) of Bowen; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Ramsey of Quincy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; three brothers, Robert, Gerald and Sam Ramsey; a niece, Ronelle Bunnell; and a sister-in-law, Jean Ramsey.

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Friday in the Plymouth Circle Community Center (formerly Plymouth United Methodist Church), conducted by the Rev. Bruce Weiman. Entombment will follow at the Bowen Abbey Mausoleum near Bowen.

VISITATION: noon until the time of services Friday in the Plymouth Circle Community Center.

MEMORIALS: Living Faith United Methodist Church or the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
