Donald A. "Whitey" "Duck" Schmidt, 83, formerly of 740 Valley Road., died at 8 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 17, 2013) in the Illinois Veterans Home, Quincy.

Donald was born March 28, 1929, in Quincy, a son of August and Bertha Loher Schmidt. He married Jacqueline Stoermer on July 19, 1952, in Quincy. She survives.

He was a 1947 Quincy High School graduate, and served in the U.S. Army as a corporal from 1947-1950. Mr. Schmidt was a systems analyst for Gardner Denver for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He also worked for Case International in Burlington, Iowa, and Potlatch in Lewistown, Idaho.

He belonged to the Moose, the Eagles, South Side Boat Club and the Mart Heinen Club over the years. He collected beer cans and golf balls. He was raised in the Catholic faith. Mr. Schmidt was an avid QU Hawks fan and a QHS Blue Devils fan. He was also a J.A. mentor. When he and Jackie were first married, they loved to square dance and attended dances in the Tri-State area.

In addition to his wife, Jackie, he is survived by his daughter, Nanette (Mike) Tharp of Quincy; his son, Eric (Sue) Schmidt of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; five grandchildren, Dustin Tharp of Quincy, and Kassi, Jessi, Erika and Jadelyn Schmidt, all of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; two sisters, Shirley Kuse of Quincy and Betty Sipek of Pittsfield; a brother-in-law, Dell (Kathy) Stoermer; a sister-in-law, Sally Stoermer; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers in infancy; two brothers, Bob and Merle Schmidt; three brothers-in-law, Maurice Kuse, Richard Sipek and Jay Stoermer; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Viola and Robert Stoermer.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Monday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim White conducting. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

VISITATION: 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Monday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
