PLEASANT HILL, Ill. -- Robert R. "Bob" Weir, 85, of Pleasant Hill, died Wednesday morning (July 10, 2013) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy. Bob was born at the family home in Pleasant Hill on July 12, 1927, the youngest child of L.L. and Hallie Gill Weir. He married Velma I. Prater on Jan. 7, 1960, at the home of Brother Joe Maynard in Pittsfield, and she survives. Bob spent his entire working years at the family-owned Weekly Messenger newspaper, first as a pressman and then as owner, publisher and editor from 1975 until his retirement in 1990. Following his retirement, Bob was employed by the Sny Island Levee Drainage District at its pump stations, a job he truly enjoyed. He was a 1945 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Bob was a member of the Pleasant Hill American Legion Post 1048 and also had served as treasurer for the Pleasant Hill Senior Citizens Group. He was a longtime member of the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Velma I. Weir of Pleasant Hill; two sons, Ron (Valerie) Weir of Quincy and Stan Weir of Pleasant Hill; four grandchildren, Clint (Megan) Weir, Olivia (Scott) Schwindt, Janelle (Stephen) Bauman and Gage Weir; three great-grandchildren, Maggie and Sadie Weir and Tristan Howard; a sister, Carolyn Smith of Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clarence, Lee, Paul and Floyd Weir; a sister, Helen Kindle; a son, Bruce in 1964; and a granddaughter, Michelle Weir Peterson on July 5, 2013. SERVICES: 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill, conducted by Brother Jimmy Hodges and Clint Weir. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. MEMORIALS: Crescent Heights Cemetery Association.
