PITTSFIELD, Ill. -- Charles "Dale" Killebrew, 89, of rural Pittsfield, died Saturday (Aug. 31, 2013) in the Barry Community Care Center in Barry. Dale was born in Pittsfield on May 30, 1924, a son of Charles Edward and Faye Emily Ransom Killebrew. He married Betty Jo Hollembeak on July 5, 1947, and she died March 9, 2012. Dale retired after 20-plus years with the Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He farmed for many years south of Pittsfield on the family farm from a young age with his dad. He and Betty enjoyed camping and were involved in the Fireside Friends Camping Club. He was an avid gardener, canning lots of produce every year. Dale loved to fish and served his fish to many people over the years and some of the family's fondest memories are Dale's wiener roasts and hay rides. He was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church and a devout Republican. He is survived by a daughter, Becky Killebrew Walls, and a grandson, Chuck Killebrew, both of Pittsfield. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty; a daughter, Sharon, on Dec. 6, 2012; and a sister, Helen Loyd. SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield, with Pastor Mike Pierce conducting. Interment will be in West Cemetery, Pittsfield.
