Seabron Nolin Obituary

NOLIN, Seabron Avery

Seabron Avery Nolin of Sunset Beach, California passed away
peacefully at home in the presence of children and grandchildren on Saturday, May 11, after a long illness.

Seab was born in Eufaula, Alabama, on August 18, 1924, the second of four sons born to W. S. and Rosa Nolin. He attended Eufaula High School where he displayed a talent for mechanical drawing and art. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 10, sponsored by Cowikee Cotton Mills, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1939. He worked occasionally in the mills on school breaks.

Seab enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in June, 1943, concealing his poor eyesight in order to pass the physical. He was trained as a radio operator and gunner as well as a rifleman, and attained the rank of Corporal. He saw service in the Marianas Islands and participated in the recapture and occupation of Guam from April, 1944 through May, 1945, until illness and injury required his return to MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina.

While at Cherry Point, he met Marine Sgt. Velda J. Eubanks and the two became engaged to be married pending the end of the war. After the invasion of the Japanese home islands was made unnecessary by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Seab realized that he would live past his 20th birthday, and considered every day after that to be a gift from God.

Seab and Velda married on the day of her military discharge on May 10, 1946 and remained married 62 years until Velda's death in 2008.

After graduating Fullerton Junior College and Whittier College, Seab went to work for the Whittier Union High School District, first as an English, History, and Government teacher, and then as Principal of Whittier High School from 1958 through 1969. He finished his career with the district as an Assistant Superintendent, and thereafter served as a self-employed management consultant for the California Highway Patrol, among other organizations. He earned a Doctoral Degree in Education from the University of Southern California in 1976. He is Past President of the Whittier Host Lions Club.

Seab travelled extensively with the family by house trailer and camper, especially in the southeastern United States and Utah. No matter the route or destination, there was an emphasis on visiting locations of American cultural and historical significance. After the kids had grown, he and Velda vacationed in England and other parts of Europe, and established close and enduring friendships with people on both sides of the Atlantic.

Seab is survived by daughters Nancy McGinnis of Camarillo, California, Polly Bolton of Sunset Beach, California, and Jean Halsell, also of Camarillo; Sons Jim Nolin (wife Jo) of Redlands, California, and Bob Nolin (wife Traci) of Whittier, California. He had nine grandchildren: John Crumrine (children Avery and Zoe), Kenneth Crumrine (wife Brandye; children Brianna, Bradley, Kate, and Kevin), Benjamin Candelaria, Thomas Nolin, Rebecca Nolin, Michael Halsell (daughter Layla), Hillary Halsell, Stephen Nolin, and Elizabeth Nolin.

Services and interment in Riverside National Cemetery adjacent to Velda are pending. For those inclined to make a charitable donation in Seab's name, the family suggests the Semper Fi Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, the United States Marine Corp Museum, the Braille Institute, or the Boy Scouts of America.
