"Charlie" Westlund


Charlie Westlund passed away on Monday, May 6th at the age of 89. He was born on August 23, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Charles and Hulda Westlund. He attended Northeastern University until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in May of 1942. He proudly served in Company B, 130th Armored Division throughout Europe, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge and even in Poland (the liberation of Auschwitz). After his honorable discharge, he continued his education at Northeastern earning a B.S. degree in Engineering in 1948. He was immediately hired by Douglas Aircraft (McDonnell-Douglas Corporation) and moved to Long Beach. He eventually retired from Boeing in 1992 working over 44 years as chief mechanical engineer, hydro-mechanical engineer, director of systems and equipment and FAA designate.Charlie was very active in the Long Beach community serving as Indian Guide chief, Baseball and Softball Coach for Los Altos Little League, on the Parent Advisory Committee of Tincher Elementary School. He was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to the Board of Governors of the California Auctioneer Commission and the California Athletic Commission. He was appointed by Mayor Beverly O'Neill to the City of Long Beach Condemnation Appeals Board. He was a Trustee of the St. Mary Medical Foundation and served on the Hill Junior High and Wilson High School Boosters and was a member of the Long Beach City College Foundation, Athletic Associates. He was a member of the ROMEO Club. Charlie is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Grace Margaret "Meg" Westlund; his children, Charles G., Jr. "Jerry" (Karen), Jim and France (Eythor) Bender; and grandchildren, Emily Westlund, Sven Charles and Ava-Grace Bender. A Memorial Service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 346 Termino, Long Beach, 90814 at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14th.
