Henry C. "Hank" Shaffer
1920-2014
Henry C. "Hank" Shaffer was born on August 7, 1920, in Norfolk, Virginia and passed away peacefully on February 2, 2014, at Inland Christian Home in Ontario, California following a short illness.
A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1947, seeing action in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, where he participated in the cleanup after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Following his service, he returned to Ontario, where he resided until his death.
His first wife, Olive Marie Shaffer, and his second wife, Phyllis Shaffer, preceded Henry in death. He is survived by three children: Roger Shaffer and wife Suzie of Lacey, WA, Steven Shaffer and wife Debbee of Olympia, WA, and Linda Frost of MT Baldy, CA, and stepdaughter, Sharon Dorsey and husband Dana of Bangor, ME. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Roger Shaffer, Jr., and William Shaffer of Seattle, WA, Jason Shaffer of Olympia, WA, Jenna Shaffer of San Diego, CA, Lisa Frost of Los Osos, CA, and Julie Frost of Wrightwood, CA. He also leaves two step-granddaughters: Beth Ann Adams and husband Jeremiah of Northfork, VA and Amy McNichols and husband Thomas of Manchester, NH. Additionally, he is survived by three great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.
Henry was active in the Disabled Veterans' Association, serving as Chaplain, and assisted residents in many capacities at Inland Christian Home. He was an avid bowler, participating in numerous bowling leagues, and was a fixture at Brunswick Lanes in Upland for many years.
Services will be held March 24, 10:00 A.M. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1150 West 21st Street (corner of Mountain and 21st) in Upland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Inland Christian Home, 1950 South Mountain Avenue, Ontario, CA 91762, in the name of Henry Shaffer.
