Jan "John" van der Zwaag
81, passed away very unexpectedly at home on August, 20, 2013. Jan was born in the Netherlands as one of six children. He immigrated to the United States at age 25, first spending time in Illinois and then moving to California. Jan was an auto mechanic and along with his wife Henny, had their own auto repair shop and automotive center in Montclair. He went to work with pleasure every day. After retirement, Jan spend much of his time volunteering, primarily at the Mennonite Central Committee Thrift in Rancho Cucamonga and his "bread route," where he picked up day-old bread at local bakeries to bring to a food pantry. He also spent much time tending his garden at home and at the auto center. He enjoyed traveling, especially back to his home country of the Netherlands. For over 40 years, he attended First Mennonite Church in Upland. Jan is survived by Henny, his loving wife of 50 years, son Tabe, daughter Minka, granddaughter Lucia, sister Fetsje, brother Klaas, two sisters-in-law, Anneke and Ruth, and several nieces and nephews. He was a devoted and loving Heit and Pake (father and grandfather.) He will be extremely missed. Services will be held at 1pm on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at First Mennonite Church, 379 N. Campus Avenue in Upland. A private burial is pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 1010 G Street, Reedley, CA 93654.
