Ray lived his entire life in Long Beach. His parents Juan and Juanita Rodriguez farmed Bixby Ranch land. He dropped out of LB Poly to join the war effort. Ray served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. His education included LBCC, CSULB BA Ed, MA School Admin., USC MA U.S. History and Stanford University on a Ford Foundation Fellowship. Ray taught at all educational levels. He served as a master teacher, assistant principal at LB Poly, an affirmative action officer and dean of personnel at LBCC. He retired after 35 year of service. .In addition to teaching, Ray wrote a weekly column for the Press-Telegram and El Economico. He co-authored Decade of Betrayal, dealing with the repatriation of one million Mexicans during the Great Depression. The book received the Gustavus Myer Center award. Ray was the founding president of the statewide California Community College Affirmative Action Consortium, and the founding president of the Long Beach Chapter of AMAE. He served as vice president of the USC Mexican-American Alumni Association. Ray is survived by his wife of 49 years, Almira, his son, Craig Smith, his daughter, Carla (C.J.) Crockett & husband Dave, 5 grandsons, Spencer, Hunter & Tanner Smith, Justen & Austen Crockett. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to any educational foundation, may be made in his honor.
