Obituary Condolences

SPANOS, WILLIAM JOSEPH December 8, 1924 to February 7, 2011 Today we mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Dr. William Joseph Spanos, loving husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather. William died Monday, February 7, 2011, at home in Del Mar, CA, at age 86. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, William attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he met the love of his life, Charlene McNiel, who he later married. He was accepted to Medical School at Loma Linda University and followed with a residency in OBGYN. He did a cancer surgery fellowship at the University of Kansas where he served on the faculty until 1960 when William moved to Redlands, California with his family. While living in Redlands, William served on the faculty of UCLA and did private practice in OBGYN until 1998. For 17 years, William volunteered at the City of Hope, doing cancer surgery. William and Charlene lived in Redlands for 49 years until they moved to Del Mar, CA, in 2009. William loved life and especially loved bringing life into this world. He delivered thousands of babies during his practice of OBGYN in Redlands. He had a great sense of humor and also a very caring nature. He was loved by his patients and enjoyed treating multiple generations of the same family. William was devoted to his family, and we will miss him dearly! William leaves behind his loving family; wife of 65 years, Charlene; children: William Spanos, Jr. (Marian), and Susan Holcombe (John); grandchildren: Chad Spanos (Dana), Stephen Spanos (Stephanie), John Holcombe, Jr., and Lisa Abbot (Matt); great-grandchildren: Anna and Marin; Brother-in-law, Robert McNiel (Karen & Lawrence). Also, included as family are Suzie & Kurt Byward. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, 2:00 P.M. at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121.
