Kathleen Ashtion English Obituary
Kathleen Ashton English, died in Concord, California, August 22, 2018, surrounded by family and loved ones, including her beloved husband, Peter. Raised in Abington, Massachusetts, Kathleen attended Abington High School and later graduated with honors and a BS (Physical Therapy) from Tufts/Bouve' College in Boston, her final years on an AIR Force scholarship. Becoming an Air Force lieutenant, she served at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio, and was responsible for establishing a new physical therapy department at Edwards AFB, California. Upon leaving the Air Force, Kathleen settled in the San Francisco Bay Area where she met and married Peter English in 1970 in Marin County. Up until 1990, Kathleen maintained her professional career, working 25 of those years as a physical therapist at Marin General Hospital, the last three as manager of physical and occupational therapies. During that time she earned an MS in Hospital Management at the University of San Francisco. Over the years at Marin General she and four others formed the hospital's first Ethics Committee. This in turn led to a new passion: her pursuit of a doctoral degree in bio medical ethics at UC Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union. Her studies required a PHD to counsel doctors, lawyers and physicians who claimed to be "ethicists" when deciding major controversial issues affecting life and death in conjunction with the practice of medicine. Unfortunately, a series of serious spinal issues forced Kathleen, in 1994, to take a leave from the GTU. Her medical problems worsened with time and she was unable to complete her program. However, life with Kathleen was never dull. The 2nd of 5 children, sandwiched between 2 brothers, she learned early on how to be assertive, defend her interests, and throw herself into everything she did. She proved to be an outstanding daughter, sister, wife of 48 years, mother, grandmother, and dear friend. Kathleen loved to travel, starting with the Air Force. On days off, she'd hop aboard Air Force cargo planes for quick visits around the U.S. She made it clear that her "bags were always packed": excited to go places - and she did. Kathleen was preceded in death by her father, Joseph, her mother Celia, and brother, Tom. Besides Peter, Kathleen is survived by her son, Mark, daughter-in-law, Cori, and her twin grandchildren, as well as a brother, Jim, sisters Lorraine Ashton and Joan Bosze, a sister-in-law, Annette Ashton, plus two nephews, seven nieces, ten great-nephews and four great-nieces. Contributions in Kathleen's memory can be made to Marin Community Clinics, 9 Commercial Blvd, Suite 100, Novato, CA 94949; or Bouve' College of Health Sciences Center, at Northeastern University, c/o Tracey Geary, JD, 360 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA 02115. A memorial service honoring Kathleen's life will be held on Saturday, September 15, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 14 Lagunitas Ave, Ross, California, with a reception to follow. All who knew Kathleen are welcome.
