Rita Ready

1923 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Rita Mary Ready passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family on August, 22, 2013. Rita was born on December 22, 1923, in San Pedro, California, the only child of Frederick J. and Ruth H. Shea. Her Dad, a Naval Officer, died at sea in 1931. Rita and her Mom, moved to Arizona with her maternal grandparents, while her mom completed college in Tucson. They then returned home to the family home on Jean Road in Arlington, MA, where Rita lived with her mom, and grandparents. Ritas other home was her beloved Peabbles Cove in Cape Elizabeth, ME, where she spent summers with her family. Rita attended St. Johns High School in Cambridge, MA, where she met the love of her life, John C. Ready. They married on June 16, 1945, and were blessed with a family of eight children. Rita, an only child often said how did I end up with a family of eight!, but her family was her lifeblood. She approached motherhood as she did life, with passion and grace. Rita and John raised their family in Arlington, MA, where she was very involved in the community. She was the first president of the Arlington Catholic High School Mothers Guild and on the board of the Middlesex South Medical Auxiliary. They spent summers at Peabbles Cove, where she shared her love of the ocean with her children. In 1976, they moved to Broad Cove in Cape Elizabeth to live full time. Rita was a long time member of St. Bartholomews Womens Group, the Cape Elizabeth Historical Society, Garden Club and a longtime volunteer at Mercy Hospital. When her youngest child went off to college, Rita decided to surprise everyone and went to work for Dr. Robert Sommers in Portland for several years. After the children were grown, she and John lived full time in Peabbles Cove, where she welcomed her grandchildren and great grand children. Rita approached everything in life at full speed ahead. You could find her at 5:30 every morning swimming at the Cape pool, if you missed her there; her next stop was walking Crescent Beach. If you were fortunate enough to stop by the house, you would be guaranteed something fresh out of the oven, while she shared the latest news about the kids and grandkids. Mrs. Readys chocolate chip cookies were world renowned, highly coveted, and generously shared. Rita and John traveled the world, cruising to different ports. Rita made friends wherever she went, embraced the local cultures and people, especially the children. She and John spent winters cross country skiing in Bryant Pond, ME and then later trading the snow for sun, in wonderful Marco Island, FL. Rita possessed a remarkable inner strength that supported her through out life. At age 80, she participated in the Polar Dip on New Years Day at Kettle Cove with her grandchildren. When interviewed for the news, she exclaimed, It was great! Throughout her life, she led by example, that you could achieve whatever you set your mind to, and continued to display this contagious enthusiasm until she passed. Her daughter, Sheila who passed away at four months of age in 1950, and her son-in-law, Marty Laughlin, predeceased Rita. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, John, her children Elizabeth, Kathleen and husband Paul Smith, Sharon Laughlin, John C. Ready, Jr., Janet and husband Curtis Brown, Francis Ready, Rita Shea Ready, and her husband Kevin ODonovan and grandchildren, Patrick Smith, Kristin Roberto, Marty, Jon, and Ryan Laughlin, Sheila Laughlin Morrison, John and Brendan Ready, Curtis and Brett Brown, Michelle Brown Demers, Joseph and Chris Decereau Ready, and Casey and Isabella ODonovan and sixteen great grandchildren. Ritas family is extremely grateful to all of those who assisted us in caring for her. Especially, her angel, Allison Wyman, who lovingly spent her days caring for Rita, her good friend Denny Maddaleni whose friendship and support meant so much, and to the wonderful staff from VNA Hospice, Shellie, Sarah, and Keith whose compassion buoyed Rita and her family in their time of need. There will be a funeral mass at Saint Bartholomews Church in Cape Elizabeth, ME at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 26th, 2013, immediately followed by a celebration reception at the church. Pleasant Cemetery in Arlington.
