George Rogers Obituary

INCHESTER George Carrington Rogers, Jr. of Winchester, MA, formerly Arlington, MA, slipped away on Oct. 21, 2017 after complications from a fall on his regular morning walk. Born in Camden, NJ on March 28, 1923, he was son of the late George C. Rogers, Sr. and the late Florence May Rogers (McDowell). George celebrated 67 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Sarah (Sally) Rogers (Steck) who also shared the exact same birthday. Loving father of Caleb C. Rogers of Lexington, MA and his wife, Ricki D. Pappo and Mary M. Rogers of North Billerica, MA. Grandfather (Poppy) of Rebecca E. P. Rogers and her husband Danny Loss of Arlington, MA and Jason Rogers and his wife, Emily Koh of Athens, GA and. Great grandfather of Gabriel and Maxwell of Arlington, MA. Rebecca and Danny recently purchased the beautiful home in Arlington that George and Sally shared for over 50 years. Growing up in Camden, George was active in neighborhood and church activities and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Later summers were spent working at the Campbell Soup Company and the City of Camden Engineering Department. George served in the US Army during World War II, was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and crossed the Rhine at Remagen. He later earned a BA and MA from Colgate University in Education and Psychology. George and his growing family moved to the Boston area in 1954 where he began his teaching career at Boston University. Later, he taught psychology, sociology and anthropology at Mass Bay Community College for over 35 years and was proud to have been one of the founding faculty members when they first opened their doors in 1961. He was active in the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and enjoyed many hiking trips with the AMC while Sally was off participating in Elderhostel (now Road Scholar) programs. Upon retirement, George volunteered for over 20 years at the Arlington Friends of the Drama (AFD) community theatre. While most of his work was backstage where he built sets and managed the house, George did appear on stage in Arsenic and Old Lace, Titanic, Death and the Maiden and held the title role in Marvins Room. George was always ready to acquaint newcomers with AFD by presenting the latest AFD brochure he always carried. A favorite winter hobby was to force bulbs, providing a beautiful assortment of daffodils, hyacinths and tulips to brighten their home in the New England winter months. George will also be greatly missed by his brother-in-law, Malcolm M. Steck, Jr. and his wife, Trudi, of Palmyra, VA and his eight loving nieces and nephews and their families. George was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Margaret S. Jakway and her husband, Edward; his sister-in-law, Mary S. Weiford and her husband, Richard; and his brother-in-law, Duncan G. Steck. Georges family and friends will miss his warmth, his humor, his recommended readings and especially his hugs. If you wish to remember George please consider a membership or a memorial donation in his memory to the Arlington Friends of the Drama, 75 Academy St, Arlington MA 02476. Nothing would please him more than knowing others found enjoyment from the exceptional productions performed at AFD. www. afdtheatre.org A Celebration of Life memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 18th at the Arlington Friends of the Drama. Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements by the Rogers & Hutchins Funeral Home at 292 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA 02420. (781) 641-0292

I am of graduate of the 1st class of MBCC - 1963. I have very fond memories of Prof. Rogers. He was a most caring and gentle man. I was a part of the office staff until 1966. Those were good times because of people like Prof Rogers. Rest in peace.
