John Griffin Obituary
John H. Griffin, beloved husband of Mary Rose, died peacefully and surrounded by his family, on February 10 in Belmont, MA. He was 82 years old. Mr. Griffin was raised in a newspaper family. His father served as Editor in Chief of The Boston Post, which was the largest circulation newspaper in Boston during the 1950s. His father, John H. Sr. and his mother, Alice (Barry) Griffin, raised their six children on Russell Avenue in Watertown, Mass. Mr. Griffin attended St. Sebastian's Day School and graduated in 1955 from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Following college, he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps. In 1956, Mr. Griffin married Mary Rose McCarty of Waltham, Mass. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Mr. Griffin worked as a newspaper reporter, first for The Boston Post and then for Shamie Publications, for which he covered the food industry for the company's papers in Boston, New York and Detroit. In 1966, Mr. Griffin founded The Griffin Report of Food Marketing, which became the leading regional food trade newspaper in the United States. Based in Boston, Mr. Griffin's company – Griffin Publishing Company – expanded geographically – to New York and Atlanta – and in its coverage, with the founding of AdEast, covering the advertising business, and Yankee Food Service publication, covering the restaurant industry.
In 1969, Mr. Griffin and his family moved to Dennis on Cape Cod where he and Mary Rose raised seven children. In Dennis, Mr. Griffin served in numerous public capacities, including as a Selectman. Mr. Griffin was known not only for his countless friends but also for his industriousness. He was a master woodworker and an accomplished gardener. In addition to Mary Rose, Mr. Griffin is survived by six of their seven children; Lisa Griffin, 56, of South Yarmouth, Jack Griffin, 53, of Greenwich, CT, Tom Griffin, 50, of Naples, FL, Kevin Griffin, 48, of Duxbury, Carolyn Cleary, 44, of Ellicott City, MD, and Mary Ellen Griffin, 43, of Leominster,and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Stephen M. Griffin of Dennis. Mr. Griffin is also survived by his five siblings; Richard Griffin of Cambridge, MA, Maureen Griffin of Melrose, MA, Kevin Griffin of North Andover, MA, Gerald Griffin of Mont Vernon, NH, and Carol Griffin of Medford. Family and friends are invited to call at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA on Friday, Feb. 14 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15 in Saint Pius X Catholic Church on Station Avenue in South Yarmouth.
