Eloise Caroline Martel Milligan died Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Arlington Rest Home in Arlington, MA, following a long illness. She was 89. Eloise was born in 1923 in Newburyport, MA. She was the adopted daughter of Major Sadie Martel of The Salvation Army. Eloise graduated from Waltham High School and married Roger Milligan, an aeronautical engineer. Together they moved to Seattle and both worked for The Boeing Company for several years before returning to their native Massachusetts, ultimately settling in the town of Bedford. Roger and Ellie owned a house on Reed Lane in Bedford, and they raised their three children there. In 1974, the Milligans purchased the Arlington Rest Home, then known as the Arlington Nursing Home. Mrs. Milligan attended Babson College to earn certificates that would enable her to become the administrator for the home. She would run the Arlington Rest Home for the next 30 years. She retired in 2004 and was succeeded as administrator by her daughter, Janice Hilson, who continues as the rest homes administrator today. Mrs. Milligan adored spending time with her children and grandchildren. She vacationed in Kennebunkport, Maine, Bermuda, and Cape Cod. Mrs. Milligan was a lifelong lover of all animals. She owned many beloved dogs and cats throughout her life and regularly made donations to charities for animal protection. Throughout the years, Eloise remained fiercely loyal to The Salvation Army. But she also enjoyed the Catholic Church and regularly participated in Mass at the Arlington Rest Home. She enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband, Roger. As they grew older and Roger retired, they took weekly trips to Maine to eat at the same seafood restaurant and sit in their car by the ocean. Mrs. Milligan became a resident of the Arlington Rest Home in 2011, following the death of her husband Roger that year. Mrs. Milligan is survived by her daughter, Janice Hilson; her daughter, Kimberley Baker, and son-in-law John Baker; her son, Brian Milligan, and daughter-in-law, Alison Milligan; her grandchildren, Kyle and Alyssa Hilson, Grace Baker, and James and Aidan Milligan; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Roger Milligan; by her adopted mother, Sadie Martel; by her two adopted sisters, Ruth Martel Gross and Genevieve Martel Phelan; and by her son-in-law, Wayne Hilson.
