Sean M. Peters, 22, of Medway, died Saturday, April 29, 2017 of complications from Type 1 Diabetes at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Silver Spring, Maryland on July 24, 1994, he was the son of Christopher J. Peters and Alison T. Slack of Medway. Sean lived in Medway since age six and graduated from Medway High School in 2013. A graceful athlete, he excelled in hockey, golf, football and, especially, lacrosse, which he continued during four years at UMass Dartmouth. In his final game, just a week before his death, Sean scored two goals and had two assists in helping lead the Corsairs to a win. He was a senior majoring in crime and justice, and his goal was to become a police officer. Sean responded to the challenges of his own diabetes with courage and by helping others. He spent five summers as a beloved staff member at Camp Joslin in Charlton, working with children with diabetes. He had been a camper there for 10 years. Sean enjoyed frisbee football, golf, and fishing, and loved family visits to Meddybemps Lake, in Maine. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother James Peters and his sister Katie Peters, both of Medway, his grandparents Warner and Carolyn Slack of Newton, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, May 5 from 3 | 8 p.m. in the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com). A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, May 6 at 3 p.m. at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in the Woodland Commons Center, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA. In lieu of flowers, Seans family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Joslin Diabetes Center - Development Office, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215, Camp Joslin, c/o Barton Center for Diabetes Education, Inc., P.O. Box 356, North Oxford, MA 01537, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004.

I was deeply saddened to hear of your son's passing. My son is 7 and has Type 1 since he was 19 months old. This is the unthinkable, you are in our hearts and prayers. I am speaking at a conference for a Type 1 cure, and you will be heavy in my heart and on my mind when I am asking donors for a cure. I am so very sorry.

I could not even begin to imagine the pain you, as family members, are experiencing. Though I did not know him well, I still wanted to send my condolences. When I passed him in the halls, he always seemed so stress free, charismatic and happy. He had such a beautiful smile that could light up any room. He was a good athlete! I hope his family finds peace in knowing they raised a loving individual and he will be remembered here at UMASS.
