Charles V. Dickinson 84, of Franklin, died peacefully, with his family by his side on Wednesday March 9, 2016 following a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was the loving husband, best friend and partner of Marie C. (Mackie) Dickinson for 61 years. Born March 29, 1931 in New Haven, CT, a son of the late Joseph J. and Martha N. (McDonough) Dickinson, he was a 54 year resident of Franklin, before moving to Mendon. He was raised and educated in Holbrook, MA and attended Northeastern University. Charles was a retired engineer and worked for the GTE Sylvania Corporation for over 30 years. He was in charge of numerous projects throughout his career, which allowed him to have top-secret security clearance. He traveled the world on several government projects that took him to Greenland, Alaska, Europe and the Kwajalein Islands. A proud United States Marine, he served in World War II and Korea. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in March 1956. Charles was devoted to his 7 children and his 12 grandchildren. He loved the ocean and enjoyed vacationing with his family in Aruba. He was also a former member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks. He was the loving father of Debbie Merrifield and her husband John of Mashpee, Donna Orr and her husband Bruce of Mendon, Daniel Dickinson of Fort Lauderdale, Denise Barnett of Falmouth, Deanne Dickinson of Bellingham, Dr. Charles Dickinson and his wife Keri of Franklin and Maria McCoy and her husband Norman of Canton. In addition, he was a devoted Pappy to Shannon, Jeff, Greg and Tim Merrifield, Stephanie Mehrmann and Courtney Orr, Corey and Cole Barnett, Julia and Ryan Dickinson, Maddison and Nolan McCoy, as well as great grandchildren, Landon and JJ. Also surviving a brother, Joseph Dickinson and his wife Janet of Poquosson, Virginia and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friendships. Charles was the brother of the late Catherine Jones & Neil Dickinson. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Monday March 21st, at 9:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Marys Church 1 Church Sq. Franklin at 10AM. Interment with military honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Calling hours are Sunday March 20th from 2-5 PM at the funeral home.
