1917 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Clarence W. Gay, (also known as Bill, Willie, and Willis), 96, of Manchester, CT, loving and devoted husband for sixty-two years of Florence (Kennedy) Gay, died Monday, March 3, 2014 at a local convalescent home after a short illness. He was born in Framingham, MA on August 21, 1917, a son to Clarence O. Gay and Minnie (Willis) Gay. He was raised in West Medway, MA, served briefly in the US Army during World War II, and served in India as an American Field Service volunteer. He married Florence in 1952 and came to Manchester shortly thereafter. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor's degree and from Trinity College in Hartford with a Master's degree. Prior to retiring he was a teacher in East Hartford, CT, serving at both East Hartford High School and the former George J. Penney High School, for over twenty years. He also spent many hours as scorekeeper for the high school athletic programs, and was very involved in Democratic politics, serving on many boards and commissions. Clarence was a longtime and accomplished thespian. He was a member of the former "Oval in the Grove" of Farmington, CT and a member of the Little Theater of Manchester. He and Florence loved traveling the world, visiting fifty-five countries together, and was proud to have visited forty-five of his country's States. He was also an avid reader of mysteries, and historical and biographical novels. With his wife, he is survived by two sisters and two brothers, Audrey R. Wood of San Francisco, Helen G. Wilcox of West Medway, MA, Clarence O. "Buddy" Gay Jr. of West Medway, MA, Daniel L. Gay and his wife Ruth of Bath, ME, and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service in the Evergreen Cemetery in West Medway, MA will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
